Benign Land is an otherworldly walking simulator developed by Leandros Ntolas and published by AFTERNATURE productions. Originally commissioned as a site-specific, interactive art installation for a deconsecrated church in Belfast, the project was adapted into a digital experience and released on Steam in January 2025. Defying traditional video game conventions, the title strips away combat, puzzles, and explicit objectives, choosing instead to present an abstract, meditative journey designed to evoke deep emotional and philosophical reflection rather than offer standard gameplay.

The experience guides players through a dreamlike, slow-paced exploration across 17 highly detailed, symbolic scenes that delve into the complex psyche and layered history of Ireland. Shifting gracefully from ancient pagan times and the early spread of Christianity to the tragic hardships of the Irish Famine, the narrative heavily focuses on the haunting social scars of the Northern Ireland conflict, known as the Troubles. Players drift through these liminal spaces almost weightlessly, discovering glowing portals that seamlessly transport them forward in a looping, cyclical odyssey that mirrors a hallucinatory, after-death vision.

Drawing profound creative inspiration from the poetry of Seamus Heaney, the intricate prose of James Joyce’s Finnegans Wake, and the striking visual style of experimental cinema, the title functions as a poignant piece of digital visual poetry. To further enhance the hallucinatory atmosphere, it features a hauntingly beautiful, original ambient soundtrack composed by sound artist John D’Arcy. Ultimately, it serves as a brief but deeply memorable 30-to-45-minute artistic meditation, treating interactive technology as a unique, powerful vehicle for cultural expression and historical memory.
